Route 1 — Golden Circle Loop from Reykjavik Domestic Airport
3-4 days ~300 km Easy
01

RKV: GOLDEN CIRCLE LOOP

Year-round

Pick up your camper directly at Reykjavik Domestic Airport and you can be parked beside Þingvellir's continental rift within 45 minutes — no city detour, no shuttle. This classic loop links the three icons (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) plus the underrated Kerið crater on the return leg, all on paved Route 36/35/1. Starting from RKV is ideal for travelers connecting from a domestic flight (Akureyri, Ísafjörður) who want to roll straight into the countryside. Three days lets you sleep at Laugarvatn or Selfoss campsites; four days adds Reykjadalur hot-spring hike and Friðheimar tomato farm. A 2WD campervan handles the entire route year-round, though winter drivers should monitor road.is for ice on Lyngdalsheiði pass.

Route 2 — South Coast loop from RKV via Vík and Jökulsárlón

RKV: SOUTH COAST TO JÖKULSÁRLÓN

May-September

Roll out of Reykjavik Domestic Airport and follow Route 1 east — the entire south coast unfolds in a single, paved arc. In five to seven days you'll soak at Reykjadalur, stand under Seljalandsfoss, climb beside Skógafoss, walk the black sands of Reynisfjara, then push east to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach before looping back. Anchoring the trip at RKV (rather than KEF) saves a 50 km transfer on day one and lets domestic-flight arrivals start driving within an hour of landing. A 2WD campervan is sufficient on the Ring Road; opt for a 4x4 only if you plan to detour to Þórsmörk via F-roads. Best May–September; book Skaftafell and Höfn campsites ahead in July.

Route 3 — Snæfellsnes Peninsula loop from RKV
3-4 days ~480 km Easy
03

RKV: SNÆFELLSNES WEST LOOP

Year-round

Often called "Iceland in miniature," Snæfellsnes packs a glacier-capped volcano, lava fields, fishing villages and cinematic Kirkjufell into a tight 480 km loop. From RKV you cross the Hvalfjörður tunnel within 30 minutes and reach Borgarnes for lunch — a head start city pickups simply don't offer. Continue to Stykkishólmur for harbour seafood, sleep at Grundarfjörður under Kirkjufell, then circle Snæfellsjökull National Park via Arnarstapi's basalt cliffs and Búðir's black church. The main Route 54 is fully paved, so a 2WD campervan suits the entire loop year-round; F-roads into the highlands are summer-only and not required. Three days is brisk, four days lets you slow down for whale watching or a Vatnshellir lava-cave tour.

This is the route only RKV makes possible. Fly out of Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Akureyri in 45 minutes — skipping a 6-hour drive north — pick up your camper in the capital of the north, then drive the Ring Road counter-clockwise back: Goðafoss, Mývatn, Egilsstaðir's east-fjord detours, Höfn lobster, Jökulsárlón, Vík, and the south coast all the way home. You drop the camper back at RKV, steps from your departure flight. Seven days is doable, ten lets you breathe. Choose 4x4 if you want Mývatn's gravel side roads or Stuðlagil canyon access; otherwise 2WD is fine on Route 1. Ideal for travelers who want maximum scenery without backtracking — a classic RKV-anchored itinerary.

Reykjavik Domestic Airport Campervan FAQ

Everything you need to know about picking up your campervan at KEF and starting your Iceland road trip.

Where exactly is the campervan pickup at RKV — terminal or off-site?+

Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) is a small airport in the Hlíðarendi area, just 3 km from downtown Reykjavik, and it does not have rental desks inside the terminal like Keflavik (KEF) does. For RKV pickups, CampervanPlanet operates with a short complimentary shuttle: once you collect your bag from the domestic arrivals hall, you call or message us and we pick you up within 5-10 minutes, taking you to our nearby depot to complete paperwork and inspect the vehicle.

Plan on roughly 30-45 minutes from "wheels down" to "driving out of the depot," which is much faster than the equivalent KEF process. If you prefer, you can also walk to the terminal exit and we will meet you curbside — just let us know your flight number in advance.

Can I pick up a campervan right after my domestic flight from Akureyri or Egilsstaðir?+

Yes — this is exactly the use case RKV pickup is designed for. If you are flying in on Icelandair Domestic from Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, Ísafjörður, or returning from Vestmannaeyjar, Húsavík, or Bíldudalur, you can have a campervan ready the same hour you land. Domestic flights inside Iceland have very light luggage processes (no customs, no immigration), so you typically exit the terminal within 10 minutes of landing.

Just share your flight number when you book and we will track its arrival. This is particularly popular with travellers who fly North to start their Ring Road trip from Akureyri and then return the campervan at RKV before flying back south, or for visitors combining a Westfjords flight with a campervan loop of South Iceland.

RKV vs Keflavik (KEF) — which airport should I choose for campervan pickup?+

The rule is simple: choose the airport that matches your flight. RKV only handles domestic Iceland flights (Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, Ísafjörður, Vestmannaeyjar, Húsavík, Bíldudalur) plus a few Greenland/Faroe routes. KEF handles all international flights from Europe and North America. If you are arriving from London, New York or Paris, you must use KEF — RKV is not an option.

RKV pickup makes sense in three scenarios: (1) you flew internationally to KEF, spent a night in Reykjavik, and now want to start your road trip from town; (2) you are connecting from a domestic flight; (3) you want a one-way trip starting in the North and ending in Reykjavik. KEF is 50 km from downtown; RKV is 3 km.

RKV vs Reykjavik city pickup — when does each option make more sense?+

Because RKV sits inside the city limits (Hlíðarendi), the practical difference between an "RKV pickup" and a "Reykjavik downtown pickup" is small — typically 5-10 minutes of driving. Choose RKV pickup if you have an actual domestic flight tied to the trip: you want our shuttle synced with your Icelandair Connect arrival, or you need to drop the van and walk straight into the domestic terminal.

Choose city pickup if you are already staying at a hotel in 101 Reykjavik and want collection from there, or if you are arriving by FlyBus from KEF and want to overnight in town first. Both options use the same depot and the same fleet — the difference is purely logistical timing around your itinerary.

How far is RKV from downtown Reykjavik, and can I walk or uber there?+

RKV is remarkably close to the city — roughly 3 km from Hallgrímskirkja and the Laugavegur shopping street. Walking is genuinely doable: it takes about 35-40 minutes via the Vatnsmýri path, which is flat and pleasant in summer. In winter, with luggage, we do not recommend walking.

Iceland does not have Uber or Lyft — the local equivalent is a regular taxi (Hreyfill or BSR). A taxi from downtown to RKV runs around 2,500-3,500 ISK and takes 8-12 minutes. The city bus line 5 (Strætó) also stops near the airport for a much cheaper fare. Most CampervanPlanet customers skip the taxi entirely and use our complimentary shuttle, which is included with any RKV pickup booking.

What are the pickup hours at RKV and do they match domestic flight schedules?+

Our standard RKV pickup window is 08:00-18:00, which comfortably covers the entire Icelandair Connect domestic schedule. Domestic flights from Akureyri and Egilsstaðir typically land between 08:30 and 17:00, so virtually every scheduled arrival fits within standard hours at no extra cost. The earliest morning departure to Akureyri is around 07:30 — for that one we recommend picking the van up the previous afternoon and parking overnight.

If your domestic flight is delayed into the evening or you have an unusual schedule, we offer late pickups until 21:00 with a small after-hours fee. Outside of those hours, RKV itself goes quiet, so we ask customers to plan ahead. Sunday hours are identical to weekdays.

My domestic flight is delayed — can I still get my campervan later that day?+

Yes, and this is one of the strongest reasons to book RKV pickup with a flight number rather than a generic time slot. We monitor Icelandair Connect arrival data, so if your flight from Ísafjörður or Akureyri is delayed by weather (very common in winter on the Westfjords route), we automatically push your pickup back at no charge.

If the delay extends past our 18:00 standard window, we will move your pickup to the next morning at 08:00 and hold the van — you will not lose the rental day. In the rare event of a full cancellation of your domestic flight, contact us immediately: because RKV is in town, rebooking from a hotel pickup the next day is straightforward, unlike at distant KEF.

What are the best one-way Iceland trips that start from RKV?+

The classic combination is "fly North, drive South." Take a 45-minute Icelandair Connect flight from RKV to Akureyri, pick up a campervan there, and spend 5-7 days driving the Ring Road counter-clockwise via Mývatn, Egilsstaðir, the East Fjords, Höfn glacier lagoons, Vík, and the South Coast back to Reykjavik. You skip the long, repetitive Northwest stretch and gain two full days of exploring.

Another favourite is the Westfjords loop: fly RKV to Ísafjörður, rent there, and drive south through Dynjandi waterfall, the Látrabjarg cliffs, and Snæfellsnes peninsula back to Reykjavik. For shorter trips, RKV to Egilsstaðir gives you direct access to the East with no detours. We offer one-way drop-off at our partner depots in all of these towns.

Can I drop the campervan at RKV before my international flight from KEF?+

Yes, and many travellers do this exact handoff. Drop the campervan at our RKV depot, and from there you have several smooth options to reach Keflavik for your international flight: the FlyBus departs from BSÍ terminal (1.5 km from RKV) every 30-60 minutes and reaches KEF in 45 minutes; an Airport Direct shared shuttle does the same; or a taxi runs around 18,000-22,000 ISK.

Plan on a minimum 4-hour buffer between your van drop-off and your international departure: 30 minutes for vehicle inspection at our depot, transfer to BSÍ, 45-minute FlyBus ride, and 2.5 hours for KEF check-in and security. Dropping at RKV is often more convenient than driving all the way to KEF and dealing with parking there.

Are there parking facilities at RKV if I am picking up before an outbound flight?+

RKV has a small public parking lot (P1) right in front of the domestic terminal, with daily rates of around 1,500-2,000 ISK. It is suitable for short stays — perfect, for example, if you are dropping a friend at a flight to Akureyri before driving off — but it is not built for week-long campervan storage and the spaces are tight for larger vans.

For longer stays, our depot offers free secure parking for your rental period if you start and end at RKV. If you are flying domestically mid-trip (e.g. flying to Vestmannaeyjar for a day while keeping the van), we recommend leaving the campervan at our depot rather than P1 — it is cheaper, safer, and a 5-minute walk from the terminal entrance.

Your RKV Arrival Guide

From Reykjavik Domestic Airport to the Open Road

Everything you need to plan the first hours and first days after picking up your campervan at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). From pickup logistics to first-night strategy to which routes are realistic on day one, this guide is built for travellers who just stepped off a domestic flight at RKV.

Driving Rules in Iceland: What Changes When You Start at RKV

Picking up your campervan at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) puts you in a fundamentally different position than travelers starting at Keflavik International (KEF). RKV sits inside the city, in the Hlíðarendi neighborhood roughly 3 km from Laugavegur. That means your very first kilometers are urban, not the empty Reykjanes lava fields that KEF arrivals see. Adjust your driving mindset accordingly: expect 30 km/h school zones, roundabouts every few hundred meters, and Reykjavik's notoriously aggressive lane-merging on Miklabraut.

Speed Limits and the Core Rules

Iceland's speed limits are strictly enforced by hidden cameras, particularly on the stretch between RKV and the Ring Road. The standard limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on gravel rural roads, and 90 km/h on paved rural roads. Headlights must be on at all times, day and night, year-round. Seatbelts are mandatory for every passenger, and the blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent, which in practice means zero drinks before driving.

Exit Routes from RKV onto Route 1

Unlike KEF, where you simply follow Route 41 east for 50 km, leaving RKV requires navigating Reykjavik traffic to reach Route 1. The cleanest exit:

  • Heading north or east (Ring Road clockwise): Take Bústaðavegur east to Reykjanesbraut, then merge onto Route 1 at the Ártúnsbrekka interchange. Allow 15-20 minutes during rush hour (08:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:00).
  • Heading to the Golden Circle: Bústaðavegur to Route 49, then Route 1 east toward Mosfellsbær, then Route 36 to Þingvellir.
  • Heading south to the Reykjanes peninsula or Blue Lagoon: Reykjanesbraut south, exactly the reverse of the KEF arrival route.

Gravel Roads, F-Roads, and Insurance

Most standard campervan rentals from RKV are 2WD and prohibited on F-roads (mountain roads marked with an F prefix, such as F26 Sprengisandur or F35 Kjölur). These roads are typically only open from late June through early September and require a 4x4. Even on legal gravel roads like parts of Route 939 (Öxi), drop your speed to 60-70 km/h. Gravel damage and undercarriage scrapes are usually excluded from base CDW; ask about Gravel Protection (GP) at pickup.

Weather Windows Leaving Reykjavik

RKV's location means you get real-time weather intel before you commit to a route. Check vedur.is and road.is the morning of departure. The Hellisheiði pass east of the city closes regularly in winter due to wind and ice, sometimes with only 30 minutes' notice. RKV-based travelers benefit here: you can wait out a storm in a Reykjavik café rather than being stranded in Keflavik.

Activities & Attractions Within an Hour of RKV

The advantage of starting at RKV instead of KEF is that you skip the 50 km Reykjanesbraut drive and have an extra two to three hours of daylight on day one. These six experiences sit within 60 minutes of RKV and work as half-day shakedowns before you commit to the Ring Road.

Sky Lagoon (10 km from RKV)

Sky Lagoon in Kópavogur opened in 2021 and has become the more atmospheric alternative to the Blue Lagoon. The 75-meter infinity edge looks directly out over the North Atlantic, and the seven-step bathing ritual takes around 90 minutes. From RKV, drive south on Reykjanesbraut and exit at Vesturvör, total 12 minutes. Pure pass costs around ISK 12,990, Sér pass ISK 16,990. Book a slot at least 24 hours ahead.

Mt. Esja Hike

Esja is Reykjavik's backyard mountain, visible from the RKV runway. The trailhead at Mógilsá is 16 km north of RKV via Route 1. The standard hike to Steinn (597 m) takes 2-3 hours round trip. Wear proper shoes; the volcanic scree is unforgiving in trainers. Free parking at the trailhead, plus a small café (Esjustofa) for post-hike coffee.

Whales of Iceland Exhibition

In the Grandi harbor district, 4 km from RKV, the largest whale exhibition in Europe with 23 life-sized models including a 25-meter blue whale. Allow 60-90 minutes. Tickets around ISK 3,500 adult. Combine with a stop at Bryggjan Brugghús or the Marshall House art space, both two minutes' walk away.

Whale and Puffin Tours from Old Harbor

Reykjavik's Old Harbor (Gamla Höfnin), 5 km from RKV, hosts daily whale watching with operators like Elding and Special Tours. Minke whales, humpbacks, white-beaked dolphins, and harbor porpoises are common from April through October. Puffin tours run mid-May through mid-August. A standard whale watch is 3 hours, ISK 11,500-13,500.

Krýsuvík Geothermal Area and Reykjanes

South of the city via Route 42, Krýsuvík (35 km, 40 minutes from RKV) gives you mud pots, fumaroles, and the surreal Seltún colored earth without the crowds at Geysir. Continue to Kleifarvatn lake and the Reykjanes lighthouse for a half-day Reykjanes peninsula loop. Since 2021 the Fagradalsfjall and Sundhnúkur volcanic systems have been periodically active — check safetravel.is before approaching any active fissure zone.

Your First Night: Capital Region Campsites After RKV Pickup

Picking up a campervan at RKV in the afternoon, especially after a domestic flight from Akureyri or a delayed KEF transfer, often means you don't want to commit to a 200 km drive on day one. The Capital Region has four solid campsite options within 30 minutes of RKV.

Reykjavik Eco Camping (Tjaldsvæðið Laugardalur)

The default first-night choice and the closest licensed campsite to RKV at just 4 km. Located inside Laugardalur valley next to the city's main thermal pool and botanical gardens. Hot showers, full kitchen building, laundry, electricity hookups, Wi-Fi, free use of Laugardalslaug pool with overnight stay. ISK 2,800-3,200 per adult, plus electricity ISK 1,200. Walk-in only, open mid-May through late September. Best for travelers who want to walk into central Reykjavik (25 minutes on foot or a 5-minute bus ride).

Hafnarfjörður Camping (Vikingavellir)

South of Reykjavik in the harbor town of Hafnarfjörður, 13 km from RKV. Quieter than Laugardalur and closer to the Reykjanes peninsula — smart pick if you plan to start with the Blue Lagoon, Krýsuvík, or a Reykjanes geopark loop. Hot water, kitchen, electricity, picnic area, walking distance to old town restaurants. ISK 2,500 per adult plus electricity. Open June through August.

Mosskógar (Mosfellsbær)

Twelve km north of RKV in the Mosfellsdalur valley. The most pastoral of the Capital Region options, surrounded by horse farms and the Esja foothills. Puts you on the doorstep of Route 36 toward Þingvellir. ISK 2,200-2,600 per adult. Mid-May to late September. Best for travelers starting the Golden Circle on day 2.

Þingvellir National Park Campsite

If you arrive at RKV by mid-afternoon and feel up to a 50 km drive, Þingvellir's official campsites (Leirar and Vatnskot) put you inside a UNESCO World Heritage site for sunrise. Basic facilities — toilets and cold water at most pitches, no electricity, no showers. ISK 2,500 per adult plus park service fee. Walk-in. Open early June to mid-September. Skip if it's your first night with jet lag.

Practical first-night advice: Wild camping in a campervan is illegal in Iceland outside designated sites. Reykjavik police actively patrol Skúlagata, Sæbraut, and the Grótta lighthouse area. Always confirm gate closure time — Laugardalur locks vehicle access at 23:00.

2WD vs 4x4 — Which Campervan Type from RKV?

Gravel Roads, F-Roads, and Insurance

Most standard campervan rentals from RKV are 2WD and prohibited on F-roads (mountain roads marked with an F prefix, such as F26 Sprengisandur or F35 Kjölur). These roads are typically only open from late June through early September and require a 4x4. Even on legal gravel roads like parts of Route 939 (Öxi), drop your speed to 60-70 km/h. Gravel damage and undercarriage scrapes are usually excluded from base CDW; ask about Gravel Protection (GP) at pickup.

The RKV-First Strategy: Multi-City Iceland Without the Backtrack

Most Iceland visitors fly into KEF, drive a Ring Road loop, and leave from KEF. That works, but it forces a full 1,322 km circumnavigation and burns two days on the long stretches between Egilsstaðir and Höfn. RKV unlocks a smarter pattern: use domestic flights to skip the parts you don't want to drive, and let your campervan focus on the regions you do.

The Classic RKV-First Itinerary

The pattern that saves the most time for one-week travelers:

  • Day 1: Land at KEF in the morning, take the Flybus or taxi to RKV (50 km, 45 minutes), board a 45-minute domestic flight to Akureyri
  • Day 1 afternoon: Pick up campervan at Akureyri Airport, sleep at Hamrar campsite
  • Days 2-6: Drive south through Mývatn, Egilsstaðir, the Eastfjords, Höfn, the South Coast, and Vík, arriving back in Reykjavik
  • Day 7: Drop campervan at RKV, fly home from KEF the same evening

This cuts 400 km of relatively monotonous driving and gives you the same Ring Road highlights in 60 percent of the time.

When RKV-First Saves Money

Domestic flights with Icelandair cost ISK 12,000-25,000 one-way Reykjavik-Akureyri if booked 4+ weeks ahead. Compare that to two days of campervan rental (roughly ISK 30,000-50,000), fuel for 800 km (ISK 25,000-30,000), and accommodation. The math favors flying when:

  • Your trip is 7 days or fewer, every driving day matters
  • Two or fewer travelers, no scale advantage on the camper
  • You're visiting in winter when north-side roads are unreliable
  • You specifically want a Westfjords or Eastfjords focus and can fly to Ísafjörður or Egilsstaðir

Drop-Off Timing With a KEF Connection

This is where RKV pickups outperform KEF every time. Dropping at RKV puts you 50 km from your international flight rather than at the same terminal, but it also gives you a flexible buffer. Recommended timing: 4 hours before international departure drop the camper at RKV; 3 hours before Flybus or taxi to KEF (45-50 minutes); 2 hours before check-in at KEF. If your international flight leaves before 09:00, sleep at a Reykjavik hotel the night before and drop the camper the previous evening — RKV rental offices typically allow late drop with key-box return.

Pro tip: Build a buffer day. Domestic flights to Ísafjörður and Vestmannaeyjar are cancelled regularly in winter and shoulder seasons due to crosswinds. If you have a tight international connection out of KEF, return to Reykjavik by camper or rebook a backup flight 24 hours earlier.
