How booking works on CampervanPlanet

You book on CampervanPlanet, but you rent from the company named in each offer: it hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. Many offers take a deposit online, often 10 to 20% of the price, and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full online. At pick-up the company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver's card, with the amount shown in the offer.

Who you rent from

Every offer names the rental company. Your rental contract is with that company, which hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. CampervanPlanet compares the companies, handles the booking and payment, and supports you in your language.

What you pay, and when

Many offers take a deposit online and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher. At pick-up the rental company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s card, with the amount stated in the offer.

What the price includes

Each offer lists what is included, such as insurance, mileage and equipment, and anything paid locally, for example a one-way fee or optional extras. Prices on this page come from the CampervanPlanet price index of October 2026; the search shows live prices for your dates.

Real people behind the booking

Our team answers by email and phone in your language, before and during your trip. If you cannot find what you need, send a quote request and we ask the rental companies for you. Contact us.

Auckland Campervan FAQ

Everything you need to know about renting a campervan in Auckland, New Zealand.

A valid overseas driving licence is accepted everywhere in New Zealand including Auckland. If your licence isn't in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. Carry both documents plus your passport when you pick up at Auckland Airport or a city depot.
New Zealand drives on the LEFT side of the road, just like the UK, Australia, and Japan. Auckland is a large city, we recommend collecting the camper and heading out of town before peak traffic (7–9am, 4–7pm). Use the Northern Motorway (SH1) north to Warkworth, SH2 east to the Coromandel, or SH1 south to Hamilton; all are well signposted. Take it slow at roundabouts and the Harbour Bridge for the first day.
Most standard campervan rentals around Auckland are sealed-road only. The main highways north (SH1 to Northland), east (SH2 to the Coromandel) and south (SH1 through Hamilton) are all paved. But the Far North and Ninety Mile Beach, the 309 Road on the Coromandel, and some Waitākere Ranges tracks involve gravel, check your rental agreement or upgrade to a 4WD camper if you plan to leave the main highway. Another gravel-friendly option is rooftop tent camper hire in Auckland: a car or 4x4 with a fold-out tent on the roof that handles those unsealed stretches.
Yes, but only if your camper is "certified self-contained" (has on-board water, toilet and grey-water tank). Auckland Council is stricter than most, most central, North Shore and eastern-bay areas ban freedom camping entirely. Use designated sites like Ambury Regional Park, Tāwharanui or Duder Regional Park (book via Auckland Council), holiday parks in Orewa, Beachlands and Waitākere, or DOC campgrounds further afield. Always check Auckland Council's "Freedom Camping" map and leave no trace.
Auckland has a humid-subtropical climate with warm, long summers and mild winters, any month works. Summer (Dec–Feb) is peak for Bay of Islands sailing, Coromandel beaches and Waiheke wineries, but book 3–6 months ahead. Autumn (Mar–May) is the sweet spot: harvest season in Matakana, stable weather, and fewer crowds. Winter (Jun–Aug) stays mild (14–16°C), great for budget travellers; spring (Sep–Nov) brings blossoms, orca sightings in the Hauraki Gulf, and lower rates.
Auckland is the largest rental market in NZ and usually the cheapest per-day: budget 2-berth campers from €16/day, mid-range 4-berth from €75/day, premium/4WD from €159/day. Summer (Dec–Feb) and school holidays see surcharges. Factor in fuel (NZ petrol ~NZ$2.20-2.80/L), DOC campsites (€10–20/night), holiday park powered sites (€35–60), and the Interislander ferry if crossing to the South Island. Multi-week rentals from Auckland often come with one-way relocation deals to Christchurch or Queenstown.
Auckland Airport is NZ's largest campervan hub with 10+ brands and hundreds of vehicles, so availability is better than any other city. For summer (Dec–Feb) pickups, aim for 3–5 months ahead. Shoulder seasons (Mar–May, Sep–Nov) work with 2–4 weeks' notice. Winter (Jun–Aug) is flexible, though Queen's Birthday and school holiday weekends fill up quickly. Last-minute bookings are usually possible via CampervanPlanet, the Auckland fleet is deep enough to absorb short-notice demand.
Drive south on SH1 to Wellington (roughly 8–9 hours with stops), then take the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry from Wellington to Picton (3.5 hours through the Marlborough Sounds). Both ferries take campervans of all sizes; book the vehicle crossing 4–8 weeks ahead in peak season. Many travellers pick up in Auckland and return in Christchurch or Queenstown, a one-way fee applies but you cover both islands without backtracking.
Almost every company holds a refundable deposit on the main driver's credit card at pick-up. The amount depends on the company, the vehicle and the insurance you choose: higher protection plans lower it, and each offer shows the amount before you book. How soon the deposit is released after a damage-free return depends on the rental company.
It depends on the offer. Many bookings take a deposit online (often 10-20%) and the rest at pick-up, while others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher.
CampervanPlanet is a comparison and booking platform: we show you the live prices and conditions of independent rental companies and handle the booking, the payment and the support in your language. The rental contract itself is with the rental company you choose, whose name you see on every offer and on your voucher. That company hands over the vehicle, holds the deposit and applies its own rental terms, which you can read before you pay.
Yes. Each rental company sets its own cancellation terms, and you see them in the offer before you pay and again on your voucher. Many allow free cancellation until a set number of days before pick-up, with fees that increase closer to the date. To cancel or change a booking, write to us and we arrange it with the rental company; any refund follows the terms you accepted.
Prices are shown and charged in the currency you select on the site. Each offer lists what is included, such as insurance, mileage and equipment, and any amount paid locally, for example a refundable deposit, a one-way fee or optional extras. The total shown at checkout is what you pay online, and the voucher repeats what is due at pick-up.
CampervanPlanet lists every rental company we work with for this destination, with live prices and availability, and the company is named on each offer. Enter your dates in the search to see all of them side by side, or read our comparison guide to see how the companies differ in vehicles, insurance and service.
Yes. The daily price usually drops for longer rentals, so enter your real dates in the search to see the exact total for your trip. For rentals of a month or more, you can also send us a quote request and we will ask the rental companies for their best long-term rate.
It depends on the rental company and the offer. Many include unlimited kilometres or miles, while others set a daily allowance and charge for extra distance. The mileage policy is shown on each offer before you book, so you can compare it alongside the price.
