The big operators publish theirs openly; check the exact list in your own contract at checkout. We would rather tell you now than let an insurance assessor tell you later.
Queenstown’s infamous canyon road is explicitly banned for rental vehicles under the standard industry terms. Drive it and every scratch is yours; the cover is void.
Officially a road, practically a rental exclusion: the industry’s published restriction lists rule it out. Reach Cape Reinga on sealed State Highway 1 instead, the lighthouse is the same.
Access roads to the ski fields are closed to rental vehicles from 1 June to 31 October, exactly when you would want them. Park in town and take the shuttle up.
Short gravel runs to campsites, the seasonal legends like the Rainbow Road and Molesworth, and every alpine pass on the sealed network: that is real 4WD-camper country, and it is what this page is about.
The pattern the operators publish allows short unsealed stretches, around 12 km to reach a campsite, with longer gravel needing the operator’s prior approval. Declare your route, get it in writing, and the South Island’s best backroads open up.
Hanmer Springs to St Arnaud through high-country stations: historically open from 26 December to Easter, gates 7 am to 7 pm, with a toll paid at the old accommodation house. High-clearance 4WD required, which is rather the point.
The Acheron Road through New Zealand’s largest farm opens seasonally, roughly October to Easter, with the exact window set by DOC each year. Check the current dates on doc.govt.nz before you build a route around it.
Lindis, Porters, Arthur’s Pass, Crown Range: all sealed and open to campers, but in winter carry snow chains and fit them when the signs say so. That is the official guidance, not a suggestion.
Restricted zones need a current green self-contained certificate; from 7 June 2026 the older blue cards are no longer valid anywhere. Check the certification shown at booking before you plan on it.
