Rooftop tent on the vehicle, plus New Zealand's camping rules, honestly.

New Zealand’s freedom-camping law now runs on the green self-contained certificate, which requires a fixed toilet plumbed to a sealed tank. That green certificate has been mandatory for freedom camping since 7 June 2025. A car with a rooftop tent cannot meet that standard, and the old blue cards stopped counting on 7 June 2026. We would rather tell you before you plan around it.
In zones restricted to certified self-contained vehicles, a rooftop-tent vehicle simply does not qualify. Even a portable toilet would not change that under the current rules.
The Department of Conservation runs campsites nationwide with no self-containment requirement: Basic sites are free, Standard run NZ$10 to 20 per adult and Serviced NZ$20 to 28 with hot showers.
Commercial campgrounds welcome rooftop tents everywhere, with power, kitchens and laundry. Between DOC and the holiday parks, the itinerary loses nothing but the grey areas.
The standard rental exclusions apply here too: Skippers Road, Ninety Mile Beach and ski-field access roads are off-limits, and longer gravel needs the operator’s approval.
The whole vehicle, tent fitted, kit included, you set it up yourself in minutes and fold it flat before driving. Not a tent rental for your own car, and never sold as self-contained.
The tent travels folded and secured, always. Setting up camp takes minutes; so does packing it away when the sandflies win.
Today our booking engine confirms two automatic Indie Campers 4x4s with the tent up top, the Adventure Standard 4x4 and the newer Adventure Standard Select 4x4, both shared with our 4WD camper fleet. No compact car with a rooftop tent shows in search right now.
A road kitchen with a portable stove, a portable fridge and a fold-out sink rides along. There is no toilet or shower on board, so plan your nights around DOC sites and holiday parks with facilities.
We only list what our booking engine confirms with the rooftop-tent filter on, for Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown pick-up: today that means two automatic Indie Campers 4x4s.
Indie Campers’ automatic 4x4 with the tent up top and a road kitchen: portable stove, portable fridge and fold-out sink, but no toilet or shower. The newer Adventure Standard Select 4x4 (from about €102, November dates) shows alongside it in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown.
Verified against live availability in our search: 4x4s with the tent already fitted that you can book for pick-up in these three cities.
Both Indie 4x4s, Adventure Standard and Adventure Standard Select, for Northland, Cape Reinga and the Coromandel.
The same two Indie 4x4s, for Banks Peninsula, Arthur’s Pass and the Mackenzie Country.
Both Indie 4x4s are based here too, for Glenorchy, Wanaka and the Milford Road.
Beaches, DOC campsites and the top of the country on sealed roads, leaving the excluded Ninety Mile Beach to the tour buses.
The sealed lakeside road into film-set country, with DOC sites near the Dart Valley, and no need to so much as look at the banned Skippers Road.
Hot pools, forest walks and campgrounds that take a rooftop tent without a second glance. In season and with approval, the 4x4s can push on up the Rainbow Road.
You book on CampervanPlanet, but you rent from the company named in each offer: it hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. Many offers take a deposit online, often 10 to 20% of the price, and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full online. At pick-up the company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver's card, with the amount shown in the offer.
Every offer names the rental company. Your rental contract is with that company, which hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. CampervanPlanet compares the companies, handles the booking and payment, and supports you in your language.
Many offers take a deposit online and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher. At pick-up the rental company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s card, with the amount stated in the offer.
Each offer lists what is included, such as insurance, mileage and equipment, and anything paid locally, for example a one-way fee or optional extras. Prices on this page come from the CampervanPlanet price index of October 2026; the search shows live prices for your dates.
