Alternatives to roadsurfer: same trip, different campervan

roadsurfer rents VW California campers from around 100 stations, but you cannot book it through CampervanPlanet. In all 13 European countries where roadsurfer operates, you can book a campervan or motorhome with us instead: Indie Campers for compact vans, McRent for newer motorhomes and Touring Cars for the Nordics, with live prices and the bond shown before you pay.

The short answer

What can I book instead of roadsurfer?

For a compact van like roadsurfer's VW Californias, book Indie Campers: Fiat Ducato vans and VW Californias in every European country where roadsurfer operates, and in our October 2026 index the cheapest option in most of them. For more room, a bathroom on board or a family, book McRent: Knaus, Sunlight, Weinsberg and Hymer motorhomes never more than two years old, at 80+ stations with unlimited mileage on most rates. For Norway, Sweden, Finland or the UK, Touring Cars includes insurance, winter tyres, a kitchen kit and unlimited mileage in the daily rate. What changes is the money: roadsurfer adds a €99 service fee per booking and holds a deposit of about €1,100, while the alternatives each have their own bond and cover options, shown before you pay.

In our October 2026 index it was the cheapest bookable camper in 9 of the 13 roadsurfer countries in November, from €67 a day in Portugal. The Premium cover cuts the deposit to €500 and the excess to zero; whether mileage is unlimited depends on the depot.

What a camper really costs in roadsurfer's countries

Every month we run real searches on our own booking engine in each country: 7-night hires from one to three cities, for November 2026, May 2027 and July 2027. The table shows the cheapest bookable camper per day in euros, and the company that offered it. roadsurfer is not in our engine, so we have no measured price for it; its own 'from' rate in Europe starts at around €55 a night for the Beach Hostel in low season, before the €99 service fee.

Good to know

What roadsurfer adds on top of the daily rate

roadsurfer's 'from' prices look low, but every European booking adds a one-time €99 service fee, bedding and towels cost from about €59 per trip, and water tanks arrive empty, which matters if you fly in. The deposit of about €1,100 stays blocked on your card for up to 30 days, and the standard excess of around 3,000 only drops if you pay for a higher protection package.

To compare like with like, add those items to the daily rate before you look at an alternative. In our booking engine the deposit, the cover options and what is included are shown for every vehicle before you pay, so the total you see is the total you commit to.

Outside Europe

roadsurfer in the US and Canada

United States and Canada

roadsurfer also rents in the US (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver, Seattle, Miami, New York and more) and in Canada (Vancouver and Calgary). There we sell Cruise America: 40+ rental centres bookable with us and Class C motorhomes sleeping 2 to 7. Mileage is usually charged separately or sold in packages, so add it to the price when you compare.

Scandinavia in winter

roadsurfer has stations in Oslo, Bergen, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. For a winter trip in Norway, Sweden or Finland, Touring Cars includes winter tyres and insurance in the daily rate, and its campers stay under 100,000 km.
