Where an Iceland Campers van can take you
Iceland Campers builds its trips around the country's paved classics, and its 2WD vans handle those roads beautifully. For most first-time visitors, this is the trip: the Ring Road, the Golden Circle and the South Coast deliver the waterfalls, black-sand beaches and glacier lagoons that fill every Iceland highlight reel, all reachable on smooth tarmac.
The Ring Road (Route 1) is the signature Iceland Campers journey, a fully paved 1,332 km loop that circles the island and links almost every famous stop without ever leaving sealed roads. The Golden Circle packs Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir hot-spring field and Gullfoss waterfall into an easy day loop out of Reykjavik, ideal for a first day in a fresh van. Along the South Coast the paved road runs past Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, the Reynisfjara black-sand beach at Vik, and all the way to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and neighbouring Diamond Beach, one of the most rewarding drives in the country.
Two shorter loops round out the paved itinerary. The Snaefellsnes peninsula, often called "Iceland in miniature", offers a glacier volcano, dramatic coastline and the photogenic Kirkjufell mountain on well-surfaced roads. The Reykjanes peninsula, right beside the airport, is a lava-field detour of geothermal steam vents and coastal lighthouses that makes a natural first or last stop. Between them these routes cover the Iceland that most travellers come to see.
One honest note on limits: every Iceland Campers vehicle is 2WD front-wheel drive, so it is built for paved roads only. The mountain F-roads and the Highlands interior legally require a 4x4 and are not covered by a 2WD camper. If your dream is river crossings and Landmannalaugar, you will want a different class of vehicle. For a paved loop of Iceland's coastal wonders, though, this fleet is exactly the right tool.
