JUCY or Spaceships? Two budget campers, two very different ideas

Spaceships rents car-sized Toyota Estima campers you park like a normal car, from 18 years old with no young-driver fee, free one-way and 24/7 contactless pickup. JUCY runs a wider ladder, from the Estima-based Crib to the 6-berth Big Kahuna motorhome with shower and toilet, from airport depots in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. You can book Spaceships New Zealand with us; JUCY is not bookable through CampervanPlanet today.

The short answer

Which one should I book, JUCY or Spaceships?

Pick Spaceships if you are two people, happy without a shower, and want the lowest entry price with no surprises: every vehicle is a car-sized Toyota (plus a VW pop-top in New Zealand since 2026), anyone from 18 pays the same, one-way hires are free, additional drivers are free and you can collect the van at any hour. Pick JUCY if you need a toilet and shower on board (Chaser, Sundaze or Big Kahuna), a 4 or 6-berth, a Queenstown pickup or a dog on board. Spaceships has only two depots in New Zealand (Auckland and Christchurch) and none of its Australian vans has a toilet. In our October 2026 index the cheapest Spaceships in New Zealand cost €16 a day for a 7-night hire in June 2027; JUCY is not in our booking engine, so we do not publish its prices.

Spaceships is for you if

You want a car-sized camper, free one-way and no young-driver fee

Every Spaceship is a Toyota Estima people carrier turned camper, 1.8 m tall, so it parks in a normal bay and sips petrol. Drivers from 18 pay the same price and the same excess. One-way between Auckland and Christchurch costs nothing, after-hours pickup is free around the clock, and the Stress-Free cover (NZ$40 a day on the Estima models) takes the bond to zero. In New Zealand the Beta 2S, Sigma and Cosmo carry a separate toilet and the Green Warrant for self-contained camping; none has a shower.

  • From 18, no young-driver fee
  • Free one-way Auckland to Christchurch
  • 24/7 contactless pickup
  • Extra drivers free
  • Bookable with us in New Zealand

JUCY is for you if

You want a shower on board, a 6-berth or a Queenstown pickup

JUCY covers the whole ladder: the Estima-based Crib with no toilet, high-top Toyota Hiace vans (Chaser with fixed toilet and shower, Condo with toilet) and the 6-berth Big Kahuna motorhome. Depots sit next to the airports in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, with a free shuttle, and in six Australian cities. Towels are included, a dog travels for a flat NZ$299, and the Comprehensive cover (NZ$50 to NZ$75 a day by model) brings bond and excess to zero. The trade-off: no after-hours pickup at the moment, and you cannot book it with us.

  • Toilet and shower on Chaser and Big Kahuna
  • Queenstown airport depot
  • 2 to 6 berths
  • Dogs allowed for NZ$299
  • Not bookable with us

What budget campers really cost

Every month we run real searches on our own booking engine: 7-night hires from Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown in New Zealand and from Adelaide, Brisbane and Alice Springs in Australia, for June, March and January 2027. The table shows the cheapest vehicle and the median vehicle of each budget brand, per day, in euros. JUCY is not in our engine, so we have no measured price for it.

Good to know

Why the headline price looks so low

Both brands keep the advertised rate down and earn part of their margin on what comes after: reduced-excess cover sold per day (NZ$40 to NZ$75 at the top tier), paid extras such as camping chairs or a Wi-Fi router, and, on diesel vehicles in New Zealand, the government Road User Charges billed per kilometre. Spaceships also adds a AU$200 remote location fee at four Australian depots.

To compare like with like, add the cover you would actually buy to the daily rate. Seven nights count as eight calendar days at both brands, so a couple in a Spaceships Beta 2S with Stress-Free cover adds NZ$320 to the rental price; the same week in a JUCY Crib with Comprehensive cover adds NZ$400, and in a Chaser NZ$520.

Where you can sleep

Self-contained or not: the rule that decides your nights

New Zealand

Only vehicles with a certified self-containment warrant may stay in self-contained-only freedom camping areas. Spaceships Beta 2S, Sigma and Cosmo carry it, as do JUCY Chaser, Condo, Sundaze, Sunseeker and Big Kahuna. The Spaceships Beta and Dream Sleeper Mini and the JUCY Crib and Cloudbreak do not, so plan on holiday parks and campsites and budget their nightly fee.

Australia

No Spaceships vehicle in Australia has a toilet, and in JUCY's Australian fleet only the Big Kahuna has a fixed toilet and shower; the Coaster has a cassette toilet and the Condo and Sunseeker a cassette or fixed toilet depending on the vehicle generation. Free camping rules are set by each state and council; with a camper without a toilet you will rely on holiday parks, national park campgrounds and rest areas that allow overnight stays.

Before you book

How booking a budget camper works on CampervanPlanet

Who you rent from

CampervanPlanet compares and books, but your rental contract is with the rental company you choose, Spaceships New Zealand, Happy Campers, Campervan Village or any other. Their terms, bond and cover apply at the counter.

What you pay and when

Most offers ask for a deposit online and the balance at pickup or shortly before. The payment plan is shown before you confirm, in your currency.

What the price includes

The daily rate, unlimited kilometres where the brand includes them, and the standard cover. Reduced-excess cover, Road User Charges in New Zealand and optional extras are paid to the rental company.

Questions people ask

JUCY vs Spaceships: your questions answered

Is Spaceships cheaper than JUCY?

We can only measure what is in our booking engine. In the CampervanPlanet index of October 2026 the cheapest Spaceships camper in New Zealand cost €16 a day for a 7-night hire in June 2027 and €67 a day in January 2027. JUCY is not in our engine, so we do not publish a measured price for it. Both brands sell reduced-excess cover on top, NZ$40 a day at Spaceships and NZ$50 to NZ$75 at JUCY.

Can I book JUCY through CampervanPlanet?

No. JUCY runs its own booking system and is not connected to our engine, so we list it for comparison only and you book it directly with JUCY. In New Zealand we can book Spaceships, Happy Campers, Lucky Rentals, Travellers Autobarn, Mighty and Britz; in Australia Campervan Village, Travellers Autobarn and Mighty cover the same budget.

Can I book Spaceships through CampervanPlanet?

Yes, in New Zealand. Our engine sells the Spaceships Beta 2S Self-Contained and the Dream Sleeper Mini from Auckland and Christchurch, with live prices and the same free one-way between the two depots. Spaceships Australia is not available with us.

Do Spaceships campers have a toilet or a shower?

In New Zealand the Beta 2S, Sigma and Cosmo have a separate toilet and are certified self-contained; the Beta and Dream Sleeper Mini have none. No Spaceships vehicle has a shower. In Australia none of the four Spaceships models has a toilet, and the company does not rent portable toilets.

Which JUCY models have a shower on board?

In New Zealand the 3-berth Chaser, the Chill'd Sundaze and the 6-berth Big Kahuna have a fixed toilet and shower; the Condo and Sunseeker have a toilet only. In Australia only the Big Kahuna has both; the Coaster carries a portable cassette toilet, the Condo and Sunseeker a cassette or fixed toilet depending on the vehicle generation, and the Crib+ and Cloudbreak have neither.

Can I hire a JUCY or a Spaceships camper at 18?

Yes at both. Spaceships rents to anyone 18 or older with a valid licence, charges no young-driver fee and applies the same excess to every age. JUCY also rents campervans from 18 but does not publish a young-driver fee on its website, so ask before you book.

How much is the bond at JUCY and Spaceships?

On standard cover JUCY holds NZ$3,000 on the Crib, NZ$5,000 on the Chaser and Condo and NZ$7,500 on the Big Kahuna. Spaceships holds NZ$5,000 on its Estima campers, NZ$6,000 on the Sigma and NZ$7,500 on the Cosmo, and AU$5,000 in Australia. Both bring the bond to zero with their top cover: Stress-Free at Spaceships (NZ$40 a day on the Estima models) and Comprehensive at JUCY (NZ$50 to NZ$75 a day).

Can I pick up in Auckland and drop off in Christchurch?

Yes with both. Spaceships charges nothing for one-way hires between its two New Zealand depots. JUCY allows one-way hires between most depots, including Queenstown, and says a small relocation fee may apply without publishing the amount. Neither includes the Cook Strait ferry: you book the Interislander or Bluebridge crossing yourself, and summer sailings sell out early.

Can I take the camper on the ferry between the North and South Island?

Yes. Both companies allow their vehicles on the Cook Strait ferry; you simply drive on. The crossing is not included in the rental price, so book it separately once your one-way itinerary is fixed.

Can I freedom camp in a JUCY or a Spaceships camper in New Zealand?

Only in a certified self-contained vehicle, and only where freedom camping is allowed. JUCY Chaser, Condo, Sundaze, Sunseeker and Big Kahuna and Spaceships Beta 2S, Sigma and Cosmo carry the warrant. The JUCY Crib and Cloudbreak and the Spaceships Beta and Dream Sleeper Mini do not, so they must stay at holiday parks and campsites.

Can I bring my dog?

At JUCY yes: dogs are allowed for a flat fee of NZ$299 in New Zealand or AU$299 in Australia. Spaceships does not allow dogs or other animals in any of its campers.
