Both brands belong to Tourism Holdings Limited (THL) and hand over the keys at the same depots. maui gets the newest motorhomes, every one with a shower and toilet. Britz is the mid-range brand: cheaper, with smaller campervans and 4WD in Australia. Here is how to choose, with the prices we measured in October 2026.
Choose maui if you want the newest vehicle and a bathroom on board whatever the size. Choose Britz if you want to pay less for a very similar van, prefer a compact campervan without a bathroom, travel with a pet, or need a 4WD in Australia. In our October 2026 index the cheapest maui cost between 21 and 57 percent more per day than the cheapest Britz, depending on country and season. Reliability complaints in this group tend to follow the age of the vehicle, not the badge on the door.
Standard maui vehicles are under about two years old and the Elite option guarantees under one year. Every layout has a shower and toilet, even the 2-berth Ultima, and the Beach, Cascade and River sleep four to six.
See maui prices in New ZealandIn June 2027 the cheapest Britz in New Zealand cost €50 a day against €78 for maui. Britz also has the smallest van of the two brands (the HiTop, no shower), the only 4WDs (Maverick and Warrior, Australia) and accepts up to two pets per vehicle.

The table shows the cheapest vehicle and the median vehicle of each brand, per day, in euros. Mighty is THL's budget brand with the oldest vehicles of the same fleet.

THL, founded in Auckland in 1984, bought maui in 1988 and Britz in 1999 and, after acquiring Apollo in 2022, became the world's largest commercial RV rental operator. Its brands are not rivals but tiers of one fleet: a vehicle enters service as a maui, is rebadged to Britz as it ages and finishes as a Mighty. That is why a maui-versus-Britz decision is mostly a decision about how new you want the same chassis to be.
It also explains why the two brands share depots, airport shuttles, cover packs and most of the small print. The differences that remain are real, though: maui only rents motorhomes with a bathroom, Britz keeps compact vans and the Australian 4WD range, and only Britz takes pets.
Three shared depots near the airports: Auckland (Māngere), Christchurch (Harewood) and Queenstown (Frankton), with a free shuttle from the terminal (a courtesy transfer in Queenstown). Depots open about 8:00 to 16:30 and vehicles must be collected at least an hour before closing. One-way hires between the three depots cost around NZ$190 to 200 from April to September and NZ$295 to 300 from October to March, plus a Queenstown location fee of about NZ$260 to 270. Wellington is a ferry port, not a depot: the Cook Strait ferry is booked and paid separately.
Ten shared depots: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Hobart, Alice Springs and Broome. The three northern depots close over the wet season, roughly December to March, and the Britz 4WD range is not available from Sydney or Hobart. One-way fees run from about AU$195 to 200 between the eastern and southern cities to AU$300 on routes touching Darwin, Perth, Broome or Alice Springs; Broome adds a location fee of up to AU$900.
CampervanPlanet compares and books; your rental contract is with the THL brand you choose, Britz or maui, which hands over the vehicle, holds the deposit and applies its own rental terms.
Many offers take a deposit online and the balance at pick-up; others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher.
Every offer lists what is included (insurance level, kilometres, kit) and what is paid locally (deposit, one-way fee, optional extras). Prices on this page come from the CampervanPlanet price index of October 2026.

Yes. Both are brands of Tourism Holdings Limited (THL), based in Auckland, together with Mighty and Apollo. They share the same depots in New Zealand and Australia, the same airport shuttles and most rental terms. The difference is the tier: maui gets the newest vehicles, Britz the mid-range ones, Mighty the oldest.
It depends on what you value. maui gives you a vehicle under about two to two and a half years old with a bathroom in every model and bath towels as standard. Britz gives you a very similar vehicle a little older for less money. If you want the biggest 6-berth layouts or a bathroom in every model, choose maui; if you want a compact van, a 4WD in Australia or to bring a pet, Britz is.
Britz, in every country and season we measured. In our October 2026 index the cheapest Britz in New Zealand cost €50 a day in June 2027 and €190 in January, against €78 and €230 for maui. In Australia it was €94 and €138 for Britz against €133 and €183 for maui. All figures are for 7-night hires from up to three depots per country.
Only Britz, and only in Australia: the Maverick 4WD (2 berth) and the Warrior 4WD (4 berth), with 300 km a day included. They are not available from Sydney or Hobart. Neither brand lists a 4WD in New Zealand with us.
With Britz yes: up to two well-behaved pets per vehicle for a per-rental fee, AU$325 in Australia from 1 April 2026. maui does not offer a pet option.
Yes, with both brands, between all their depots. In New Zealand Britz asks for a minimum 5-day hire and the fee depends on the season: around NZ$190 to 200 from April to September and NZ$295 to 300 from October to March, plus a Queenstown location fee of about NZ$260 to 270. In Australia one-way fees run from about AU$195 to AU$300 depending on the route, and Broome adds a location fee of up to AU$900.
In New Zealand the standard excess is NZ$7,500 at both brands (NZ$5,000 on the Britz HiTop and Voyager). In Australia maui holds AU$7,500 and Britz about AU$5,000 on small 2WD vans up to AU$8,000 on 4WD. Both brands sell cover packs that bring the liability on 2WD vehicles to nil and reduce the amount held. The exact figure for your vehicle is in the offer before you pay.
By calendar day, as is standard in Australia and New Zealand: the pick-up day and the return day both count, whatever the time. A hire from 20 to 27 September is 8 days, not 7 nights, and daily extras and cover packs follow the same count. Our offers already show the total for your dates.
Mighty is THL's budget brand: the same vehicles once they have aged out of maui and Britz, rented at the lowest price of the group. In New Zealand Mighty accepts drivers from 18. In our October 2026 index the cheapest Mighty cost €43 a day in New Zealand in June 2027 and €75 in Australia. If price matters more than age, compare Mighty too.
Yes. We show live prices and availability of both brands in New Zealand and Australia, you book online and your rental contract is with the brand you choose. Many offers take a deposit online and the balance at pick-up; the payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher.
Pick a depot and your dates and you will see Britz, maui and Mighty together with every other company we list, with what each price includes.
