The honest bit

Where a 4WD Camper Cannot Go from Cairns

Two famous tracks sit right at the top of every Cairns 4WD search, and the local council’s own road rules exclude campervans from both. We would rather tell you now than let a ranger tell you there.

Bloomfield Track

The coastal route from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown is officially listed as not suitable for campervans, caravans or trailers, whatever the drivetrain. Partly unsealed, natural creek crossings, and it can shut after heavy rain.

CREB Track

Same official exclusion, and it closes for the wet season anyway. It is a hardcore single-vehicle track where one shower can make the clay impassable, built for stripped-down 4WDs, not campers.

Cape York

The run to the Tip is its own expedition with its own seasonal closures and rental restrictions. It is not a Cairns weekend, so plan it as a dedicated trip if at all.

What it is for

The Wet Tropics a 4x4 Camper Does Brilliantly

North of the Daintree River the world changes: rainforest to the waterline, cassowary crossings, and a road that ends where the Bloomfield begins. The ferry is the only way across, and the crossing is part of the trip.

Cooktown, sealed

The Mulligan Highway runs 331 km from Cairns, sealed the whole way, roughly four hours. All the frontier atmosphere of the Bloomfield with none of the exclusions, and open all year.

Atherton Tablelands

Waterfalls, crater lakes and cool-air camping an hour above the coast. No 4WD needed, which is exactly why it slots so well between the coastal legs.

One seasonal warning: the wet season, roughly November to April, brings rain that can cut even sealed roads for a day or two and closes the CREB entirely. Build slack into any wet-season itinerary and check conditions before each leg.

Routes

Three Tropical Runs from Cairns

Cape Tribulation

~140 km round trip • 2 days

Cairns to Port Douglas, the Daintree ferry, then the slow green road north. Sleep under the canopy and come back the same unforgettable way.

Cooktown

331 km sealed • 2–3 days

The Mulligan Highway through the savannah to the town where Cook beached the Endeavour. Sealed since 2006, open all year, and far quieter than the coast.

Tablelands loop

~250 km • 1–2 days

Up the range to Atherton’s waterfalls and crater lakes, cooler nights included. The easiest good decision on this coast.

Questions

4WD Camper Hire Cairns FAQ

Can I take a 4x4 camper on the Bloomfield Track or CREB Track?+
No. Douglas Shire Council officially lists both as not suitable for campervans, caravans or trailers, regardless of drivetrain. The CREB also closes for the wet season. For Cooktown, take the sealed Mulligan Highway instead.
Do I need a 4WD to reach Cape Tribulation?+
The road north of the Daintree ferry is a formed road, so a conventional vehicle can do it in good conditions. The 4x4 camper earns its keep in the wet tropics’ margins: heavy rain, rough sections and the confidence to camp further out.
How much is the Daintree ferry?+
Fares are set by Douglas Shire Council and are revised each July, so check the current schedule before you travel. Budget for a return crossing per vehicle, and expect queues at peak times.
Can I get to Cooktown without driving dirt?+
Yes. The Mulligan Highway is sealed the whole 331 km from Cairns, roughly four hours, and open all year. The coastal Bloomfield route is the one that excludes campervans, not this one.
When is the wet season in Cairns?+
Roughly November to April. Rain can cut roads for a day or two, including sealed ones, and the CREB Track closes outright. The dry season, May to October, is the comfortable window for the far north.
Can I drive to Cape York with this camper?+
No, treat Cape York as off the table for a hired 4x4 camper: seasonal closures, rental-company exclusions and expedition logistics put it in a different category. Cooktown is the honest northern limit of a Cairns hire.
What 4WD campers are actually available in Cairns?+
One verified model right now: the D5 4X4 Adventure Camper for two, from about €94 per day in shoulder season. Run the live search for your dates, availability moves with the season.
Does insurance cover me on closed or excluded roads?+
Assume not. Driving where the road authority or your rental agreement says you cannot means the damage is yours. Declare your route at pick-up and stick to the roads the agreement actually allows.
