Winter Closures Run the High Country

Victoria is the reverse of the tropical north: here the tracks close in WINTER. Alpine 4WD tracks shut from the King’s Birthday weekend in June until around the end of October, longer if snow lingers, and driving a closed track carries fines that reach A$925, with far worse if it goes to court.

June to October

Seasonal closures across the alpine parks and state forests. The exact list changes every year; always check Parks Victoria’s live seasonal closures page.

Why it matters here

A closed gate is not a suggestion: fines apply, insurance assumes you obeyed it, and spring tracks behind closed gates are genuinely dangerous when wet.

Plan B in winter

Winter hires still work: the Mallee and Murray-Sunset country in the state’s northwest stays open when the mountains shut, with the opposite problem, avoid its summer heat.

High Country Names Worth Knowing

Grades here come from the 4WD community rather than any official scale, so treat them as experience reports. What is consistent across all of them: low range matters, and wet changes everything.

Billy Goat Bluff

Rated by the 4WD community among Victoria’s steepest: about 1,200 m of climbing in 7 km with grades near 27%. Low range, high clearance and a cool head, experienced drivers only.

Craig’s Hut

The Man from Snowy River film hut near Mount Buller. The Clear Creek Track approach is community-rated as moderate, with river crossings as the main variable, a fair first High Country objective.

Big Desert & Mallee

Sand dunes, clay pans and the unmaintained Border Track in the far northwest: no mobile coverage and no quick rescue. Experienced parties with satellite comms only.

Three Victorian Runs from Melbourne

Licola & Dargo

Open season • 3 days

The classic High Country arc, with Billy Goat Bluff and Blue Rag for those with the experience, and gentler valley tracks for those without. November to April only.

Mansfield & Craig’s Hut

Open season • 2 days

Via Clear Creek Track to the most photographed hut in Australia. Moderate going with river crossings, the right first taste of the mountains.

Big Desert & Murray-Sunset

Remote • 3–4 days

The Mallee’s dunes and salt-lake country, open when the mountains close. No mobile coverage out there, so plan it like the expedition it quietly is.

Questions

4WD Camper Hire Melbourne FAQ

When do the High Country 4WD tracks close?+
Alpine tracks close for winter from the King’s Birthday weekend in June until around the end of October, sometimes longer if conditions stay wet. The exact list changes from year to year, so check Parks Victoria’s current seasonal closures page before planning any route.
What happens if I drive a closed track?+
Fines reach A$925 on the spot and can be far higher if the matter goes to court, and your rental cover assumes you obeyed the closure. A locked gate in Victoria is enforced, not advisory.
Do I need low range for the High Country?+
For the famous climbs, yes: Billy Goat Bluff is community-rated among Victoria’s steepest with grades near 27%, and low range is what keeps descents controlled. Gentler valley routes exist, so start with one that matches your experience.
Is Craig’s Hut beginner-friendly?+
It is the fairest first objective: the Clear Creek Track approach is community-rated as moderate, with river crossings as the main variable. Go in the open season, check water levels, and walk any crossing you cannot see the bottom of.
Is there mobile coverage out there?+
Patchy in the High Country and effectively none in the Big Desert and Murray-Sunset country. For the Mallee, official advice is to travel with company and carry satellite communication, a phone is not a safety plan there.
What can I do with a 4WD camper from Melbourne in winter?+
Head northwest, not up: the Mallee and Murray-Sunset stay open through winter while the alpine tracks are shut, and winter is actually their comfortable season. Save the mountains for November to April.
What 4WD campers are actually available in Melbourne?+
One verified model right now: the D5 4X4 Adventure Camper for two, from about €96 per day. Our last check found peak-summer dates already selling out months ahead while winter dates were open, so book the open season early.
Does insurance cover river crossings and alpine tracks?+
Read the agreement before you plan around it: water crossings and closed or prohibited roads are classic exclusions, and damage there is typically yours. Declare your route at pick-up and keep to what the contract actually allows.
