Stockton Beach Done Legally

The Worimi Conservation Lands run the biggest drivable beach near Sydney, 19 km of sand between Lavis Lane at Williamtown and Gan Gan Road at Anna Bay, and the rules are refreshingly clear.

The rules

4WD required, driving on the firm sand near the water only, and never up the front dune. Speed limit 40 km/h, dropping to 20 km/h near people or other vehicles.

Tyres

Deflating for sand is a recommendation here rather than a legal requirement, but it is the difference between driving Stockton and being recovered from it. Follow the vehicle manual and carry reinflation gear.

Getting there

About 180 km from Sydney, close enough that the beach works as a first weekend with the camper before anything more ambitious.

Beyond Stockton

Where Else the 4WD Earns Its Keep from Sydney

North and inland of the beach, the map fills with places where the drivetrain matters more than the postcode. All of them are close enough for a normal week off.

Myall Lakes & Mungo Brush

Beach driving needs its own NPWS permit, arranged online or locally, and park entry is A$8 per vehicle per day. Lakes on one side, ocean beach on the other, and some of the calmest camping on the coast.

The Watagans

Unsealed forest roads an hour from the Hunter: some fine in a 2WD when dry, others 4WD all year. Track closures come and go, check the park’s live alerts before you commit.

Turon country

Around 150 km northwest, past Capertee: creek crossings, eroded climbs and a string of gates the local custom says you close behind you. Genuine 4WD terrain, go with recovery basics aboard.

Blue Mountains caveat

Many of the range’s 4WD trails have been closed for storm repairs at various times. Never assume a track is open, check the current NPWS alerts for the specific trail before planning around it.

Routes

Three Runs from Sydney

Stockton & Port Stephens

~180 km • 2–3 days

Permit, tyre pressures, then 19 km of beach with the dunes at your shoulder. Anna Bay and Port Stephens round out the weekend.

Myall Lakes

~230 km • 3 days

Mungo Brush camps between lake and ocean, beach permit sorted in advance, and the slow ferry-and-forest roads that make the detour worth it.

Watagans & Hunter

~160 km • 2 days

Forest tracks in the morning, Hunter Valley cellar doors in the afternoon. Check the closure alerts, then enjoy the fact that nobody else thought of this combination.

Questions

4WD Camper Hire Sydney FAQ

Do I need a real 4WD for Stockton Beach, or is AWD enough?+
The Worimi Conservation Lands require a 4WD for beach driving, and soft sand is exactly where light AWD crossovers struggle. Take a genuine high-clearance 4WD, lower the tyre pressures, and it becomes a straightforward drive.
How much is the Stockton Beach permit and where do I buy it?+
A$33 for three days or A$88 for a year, from the Worimi Conservation Lands. Buy it before you drive onto the sand at Lavis Lane or Gan Gan Road, permits are checked.
What are the driving rules on Stockton Beach?+
Stay on the firm sand near the water along the 19 km permitted stretch, keep off the front dune, and hold 40 km/h, dropping to 20 km/h near people or other vehicles. The beach is shared with fishers, walkers and horses, drive like it.
Do I have to deflate my tyres on the sand?+
At Stockton it is a strong recommendation rather than a legal requirement: follow the vehicle manual, drop pressures for soft sand and reinflate before the highway. Carry a compressor, being able to air up again is what makes airing down safe.
What does Myall Lakes cost to visit?+
Park entry is A$8 per vehicle per day, payable at Mungo Brush or through the parking app, and beach driving needs a separate NPWS beach permit arranged online or locally. Confirm the beach permit price with NPWS when you book it.
Are the Blue Mountains and Watagans 4WD trails open?+
Treat every trail as unconfirmed until you check the current NPWS alerts: storm damage has closed different Watagans and Blue Mountains tracks at different times, and the list changes. Checking the alert page the day before is part of the trip.
When is the best season for a 4WD trip from Sydney?+
Summer brings the crowds and hot, soft sand on the beaches; winter firms up the inland tracks but brings rain closures. Shoulder seasons give you the beach and the forest in the same week, which is the point of hiring the 4WD here.
When should I book a 4WD camper in Sydney?+
Ahead of school holidays and summer, without much slack: Sydney’s verified 4WD camper fleet is a single model right now, so popular weeks simply run out. Book the camper first, the Stockton permit takes minutes.
