Chania is the gateway to Crete's spectacular west: the turquoise lagoon of Balos, the pink sand of Elafonisi, the sunset sweep of Falassarna and the trailhead plateau of the Samaria Gorge all sit within easy reach of a Chania pick-up. Collect your campervan here and the wild side of Greece's largest island starts twenty minutes from the airport.

Campervan Planet works in Chania with Luna Trips, a Greek operator with an E.O.T.-licensed fleet of Hymer, Sunlight, Bürstner, Weinsberg, Pilote and Crosscamp vehicles, model years 2022-2027 and most fitted with solar. A local Luna partner meets you near Chania Airport with your vehicle, and a WhatsApp group set up at booking coordinates the exact time and meeting spot before you even land. Drive up to 350 km per day with Standard Cover insurance included, pay once, 100% online, and your holiday is confirmed.

Best Time to Hire a Campervan in Chania

Choose the right season for your Crete road trip. The island has one of the longest touring seasons in Europe, with swimmable seas from May to October and a coast that stays mild all winter.

Jul-Aug

Summer Peak Season

Temp: 28-35°C • Daylight: 14+ hrs

Chania in full swing: warm seas from Falassarna to Paleochora, with the meltemi wind taking the edge off the heat on the north-facing beaches. This is the busiest period for motorhome hire in Chania, so book several months ahead, and reach Balos early or late in the day to beat the summer crowds.

Peak demand, peak prices
May-Jun & Sep-Oct

Shoulder Season Sweet Spot

Temp: 20-28°C • Daylight: 12-14 hrs

The smartest months for a campervan hire in Chania. In May the hills are green and the Samaria Gorge opens in the White Mountains behind the town, before the crowds arrive. September and October bring the warmest sea of the year, quiet roads and golden light on Chania's Venetian harbour. Availability is good and rates sit well below peak.

Best value overall
Apr & Nov

Transition Months

Temp: 15-22°C • Daylight: 10-12 hrs

April means wildflowers, snow still capping the White Mountains behind Chania, and Greek Orthodox Easter celebrated in every village, lamb on the spit included. November is mild and mostly dry on the coast, ideal for Rethymno and west-coast walks without another tour bus in sight. Pack a fleece for the evenings.

Moderate prices, quiet roads
Dec-Mar

Winter Off-Season

Temp: 12-17°C • Daylight: 9-10 hrs

Western Crete has one of the mildest winters in Europe, and the lowest rates of the year. The Samaria Gorge is shut and snow occasionally closes the high passes, but coastal touring between Chania and Rethymno works all winter, with the old-town tavernas reclaimed by locals.

West Crete Loop (from Chania)

Best: May, Jun & Sep, Oct

A compact loop from the meeting point near Chania Airport that strings together western Crete's headline beaches: the long sands of Falassarna, the famous Balos lagoon, the pink-tinged shallows of Elafonisi and the relaxed south coast town of Paleochora. Roads wind through olive groves and small villages, so keep driving days short and unhurried. One honest warning: the final kilometres to Balos are a rough gravel track, best covered on foot from the parking area above Kissamos or with a 4x4, not with the camper.

Samaria & the South Coast

Best: May, Jun & Sep

Big White Mountains scenery and the wilder Libyan Sea coast. Park at the Omalos plateau to walk the Samaria Gorge, a full-day one-way hike of about 16 km down to the coast at Agia Roumeli, open roughly May to October, with a ferry to Sfakia and bus or taxi connections back to your van. Then drive the hairpins down to Sfakia and follow the south coast past the lonely castle of Frangokastello to Plakias and the palm-lined river beach below Preveli Monastery; the roads are narrow and winding, so take the descents slowly.

Cross-Island One-Way (Chania to Heraklion)

Best: May, Jun & Sep

The full island in one line, built around the two bases: collect the van near Chania Airport and drop it at the Heraklion depot for a 75 EUR one-way fee, so there is no backtracking. Along the way you get Rethymno's Venetian old town, the historic Arkadi Monastery, the seaside caves of hippie-era Matala on the south coast, and the windmill-dotted Lassithi Plateau at around 850 m. The climb to Lassithi is a long run of hairpins on narrow mountain roads, so give it time and enjoy the views.

Types of Campervans Available

The Crete fleet is recent, model years 2022 to 2027, and most vehicles carry solar panels, so you are not tied to a hookup every night. Choose the format that fits your crew.

Compact campervan parked on a beach next to a whitewashed Greek chapel by the sea

Budget Camper Van

2 berth • Compact • Easy to park

Crosscamp-style compact campers and roof-tent setups for travellers who want wheels and a bed without the bulk. Ideal for couples, narrow harbour towns and tight village lanes, and the cheapest way into campervan hire in Chania.

Bürstner Campeo 4x4 adventure camper from the Luna Trips Crete fleet

4x4 Adventure Camper

4x4 • Off-road ready • All season

The Bürstner Campeo 4x4 is built for the Crete that lies beyond the tarmac: mountain plateaus, rough tracks towards remote south-coast beaches, and confident winter touring. If Balos-style gravel and the high country are on your list, this is your van.

Weinsberg CaraCore 700 MEG family motorhome parked amid open mountain scenery

Family Motorhome

4+ berth • Full kitchen • Bathroom

Hymer and Pilote motorhomes with full kitchen, bathroom and real beds for everyone. Elafonisi's shallow, warm water is the classic family day out from Chania, and there is space for the beach kit, bikes on the back, and long, comfortable evenings on a campsite terrace.

Chania Campervan FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking your motorhome hire in Chania.

Yes. One-way rentals between Chania and Heraklion cost a flat 75 EUR, and the fee is added automatically when you choose different pick-up and drop-off locations at booking. It works in both directions.
Yes, on part of the fleet. Campervans are welcome on the Piraeus to Chania (Souda) ferry, and the Athens to Crete one-way fee is 175 EUR. The ferry ticket depends on the vehicle's size and length and the number of travellers, and the Luna Trips team helps you organise the crossing.
You can drive up to 350 km per day within Greece, which is generous for western Crete: even the full run across to Heraklion is around 140 km. Fuel is full-to-full: you collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it full.
Yes. The gorge is open from around May to October: sleep near Omalos or Chania the night before, start the hike early, and plan the boat-and-bus return from Agia Roumeli via Chora Sfakion or Sougia back to your vehicle. It is a full day of roughly 16 km, so sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential.
