Sep–Nov

Spring

10°C–16°C • Windy shoulder

Classic 'Windy Wellington' weather as the roaring forties gust hardest, so drive carefully and pick sheltered campgrounds. Days lengthen and prices stay low, a great-value shoulder season before summer demand returns.

How booking works on CampervanPlanet

You book on CampervanPlanet, but you rent from the company named in each offer: it hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. Many offers take a deposit online, often 10 to 20% of the price, and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full online. At pick-up the company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver's card, with the amount shown in the offer.

Who you rent from

Every offer names the rental company. Your rental contract is with that company, which hands over the vehicle and applies its own terms. CampervanPlanet compares the companies, handles the booking and payment, and supports you in your language.

What you pay, and when

Many offers take a deposit online and the rest at pick-up; others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher. At pick-up the rental company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s card, with the amount stated in the offer.

What the price includes

Each offer lists what is included, such as insurance, mileage and equipment, and anything paid locally, for example a one-way fee or optional extras. Prices on this page come from the CampervanPlanet price index of October 2026; the search shows live prices for your dates.

Real people behind the booking

Our team answers by email and phone in your language, before and during your trip. If you cannot find what you need, send a quote request and we ask the rental companies for you. Contact us.

Wellington Campervan FAQ

Everything you need to know about renting a campervan in Wellington, New Zealand.

Most rentals are collected from depots in and around Wellington city, typically near Wellington Airport (WLG) in Rongotai/Miramar or in the Seaview/Petone area close to the CBD. Some suppliers offer an airport meet-and-greet or a shuttle to a nearby branch. Check your voucher for the exact pick-up address and hours, as depot locations vary by brand.
Yes. Both the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries carry campervans of all sizes across Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton, so you can drive your hire vehicle straight onto the South Island. You must book vehicle space in advance (not just a passenger ticket) and give the correct vehicle length, especially in the busy December–February season. Many suppliers also allow a one-way rental so you can drop off in the South Island instead.
Wellington is an excellent one-way hub: it sits at the base of the North Island and is the ferry gateway to the South Island via Cook Strait. Start in Wellington and head north to Napier, Taupō and Auckland, or cross to Picton and tour the South Island. Many suppliers offer one-way hire between Wellington and cities like Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown, usually for a relocation fee.
Wellington is famously windy, sitting at the funnel of Cook Strait, so expect gusty, changeable conditions in any season. Strong winds can make a tall campervan feel exposed on open and coastal roads, so reduce speed and keep both hands on the wheel. Rough conditions in the strait can also delay ferry sailings, so build in buffer time and check with Interislander or Bluebridge before travelling.
Freedom camping around Wellington is generally only permitted if your campervan is certified self-contained (carrying its own fresh water, toilet and waste-water storage). Wellington City and surrounding councils restrict or ban freedom camping in many central and coastal areas, so options near the CBD are limited. Always check the local council's rules and use holiday parks or designated sites where required, and leave no trace.
Wellington is well placed for touring: the Wairarapa is around an hour over the Remutaka Hill and the Kāpiti Coast is roughly an hour north up State Highway 1. Napier and Hawke's Bay are about four hours' drive north, while the Interislander/Bluebridge ferry to Picton in the South Island takes around 3.5 hours across Cook Strait.
For couples or solo travellers a compact 2-berth camper is easy on Wellington's hilly streets and cheaper on the ferry and fuel. Families or groups usually prefer a 4-berth or 6-berth motorhome with more space, though larger vehicles feel the crosswinds more on exposed roads and cost more on the Cook Strait crossing. Match the berth count to your group size and how much you'll drive versus park up.
Almost every company holds a refundable deposit on the main driver's credit card at pick-up. The amount depends on the company, the vehicle and the insurance you choose: higher protection plans lower it, and each offer shows the amount before you book. How soon the deposit is released after a damage-free return depends on the rental company.
Every rental includes the compulsory third-party insurance required by local law, and most also include basic damage cover with an excess. You can reduce the excess with the company's protection plans when you book, and many companies also sell them at the counter. The cover and excess of each plan are listed in the offer.
It depends on the offer. Many bookings take a deposit online (often 10-20%) and the rest at pick-up, while others are paid in full. The payment plan is shown before you pay and again on your voucher.
CampervanPlanet is a comparison and booking platform: we show you the live prices and conditions of independent rental companies and handle the booking, the payment and the support in your language. The rental contract itself is with the rental company you choose, whose name you see on every offer and on your voucher. That company hands over the vehicle, holds the deposit and applies its own rental terms, which you can read before you pay.
Yes. Each rental company sets its own cancellation terms, and you see them in the offer before you pay and again on your voucher. Many allow free cancellation until a set number of days before pick-up, with fees that increase closer to the date. To cancel or change a booking, write to us and we arrange it with the rental company; any refund follows the terms you accepted.
Prices are shown and charged in the currency you select on the site. Each offer lists what is included, such as insurance, mileage and equipment, and any amount paid locally, for example a refundable deposit, a one-way fee or optional extras. The total shown at checkout is what you pay online, and the voucher repeats what is due at pick-up.
CampervanPlanet lists every rental company we work with for this destination, with live prices and availability, and the company is named on each offer. Enter your dates in the search to see all of them side by side, or read our New Zealand campervan hire comparison to see how the companies differ in vehicles, insurance and service.
Yes. The daily price usually drops for longer rentals, so enter your real dates in the search to see the exact total for your trip. For rentals of a month or more, you can also send us a quote request and we will ask the rental companies for their best long-term rate.
It depends on the rental company and the offer. Many include unlimited kilometres or miles, while others set a daily allowance and charge for extra distance. The mileage policy is shown on each offer before you book, so you can compare it alongside the price.
