Straight talk before you plan: Kakadu’s two most famous 4WD tracks, Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls, are closed for the entire 2026 dry season for infrastructure works, reopening for the 2027 season (Parks Australia). The Top End is still packed with 4WD country, Litchfield’s Lost City, Sandy Creek, Arnhem Land with a permit, and this page sticks to what you can actually drive this year.
One rule runs the Top End: the dry season, May to October. The 4WD tracks open as the water drops, and Parks Australia’s daily Kakadu Access Report is the source of truth for what is drivable this week.
Peak dry: tracks open, waterfalls still flowing, warm days and cool nights. Also peak demand for the small 4WD fleet, book months ahead.
The gamble that pays: fuller waterfalls and fewer people, but some tracks are still drying out. Check the access report before committing to a route.

The wet closes most 4WD tracks: Lost City shuts completely and Kakadu’s 4WD routes go under water. Kakadu’s park pass is cheaper (A$25 vs A$40), but this is not 4WD season.
Kakadu’s highway and Litchfield’s main waterfalls are sealed-road territory. These are the places around Darwin where the 4WD stops being optional.

The fine print matters here: 2WD campers are barred from these tracks outright by the rental fleets, and even 4WD hire agreements list prohibited roads in the Territory. This is crocodile country too, treat every water crossing with respect and never wade in to check depth.
