The Kimberley runs on the dry season. The Gibb has no fixed opening date, it reopens after the wet only when Main Roads WA declares it safe, so check their live Travel Map before every leg.

First, the myth-buster: the Cape Leveque road has been fully sealed since 2021, so the Dampier Peninsula run no longer needs a 4WD, except the last few sandy kilometres to the cape itself and some side tracks. This is where the 4WD genuinely earns its price tag.
About 660 km of unsealed Kimberley legend between Derby, 220 km up the highway from Broome, and Kununurra. Gorges, river crossings, corrugations: the reason this page exists.
The Spring Creek Track is the only way in: 53 km of 4WD-only driving, 1.5 to 3 hours, creek crossings and no fuel inside the park. High clearance is mandatory, not marketing.
The sealed road ends in soft sand for the final approach to the cape, signposted 4WD-only. The peninsula’s unsealed side tracks to beaches and communities also stay 4WD territory.
Vehicles are allowed north of the rocks between the tides, at 15 km/h. But check your rental agreement before driving any beach, many bar it outright, and Broome’s huge tides strand cars every season.
One honest warning: every rental company restricts where you can take a 4WD. Britz requires written permission for the Gibb and the Bungle Bungles, handed over at pick-up once you declare your route. Break the rules on an off-road trail and the damage bill is yours, and unsealed-road damage is often excluded from standard cover.
