The coast road north is sealed all the way, so the 4WD is not for getting there. It is for what starts where the bitumen ends: red sand tracks, dunes and an island you reach by barge.
Beyond the Peron Heritage Precinct it is high-clearance 4WD only: single-lane tracks of soft red sand. There is a tyre station at the entrance, drop to 20 psi or less before the sand and reinflate when you are back on bitumen.
A barge from Steep Point carries one vehicle at a time across in about 15 minutes, booking essential. The island caps camping at 20 4WDs at any one time, which is exactly why it feels the way it does.
About 127 km north of Perth, a dune system some 2 km long right next to town. The closest real sand driving to the city and a sensible first day on low tyre pressures.
The Gibb River Road is Broome country, well over 2,000 km further north. A Perth pick-up is a Coral Coast trip; be suspicious of anyone who sells it as both.
The Dirk Hartog barge runs from Steep Point, takes one vehicle and trailer per trip, and costs from about A$195 per crossing depending on season. The combined limits are 10.6 m and 6 tonnes, no problem for a 4WD camper, and the crossing itself is only about 15 minutes. The bottleneck is not the water, it is the calendar: with 20 camping spots on the whole island, the barge and the campsites book out together.
Reservation is mandatory and capacity is one vehicle per run. Lock the crossing before you build the rest of the itinerary around it.
Francois Peron insists on 20 psi or less for the sand tracks and provides the tyre station to do it. The same discipline applies on the island side.
The park’s single-lane soft-sand tracks are not suitable for caravans or large boat trailers. A self-contained 4WD camper is the right shape for this trip.
