Depots are at Auckland Airport (AKL), 30 to 45 minutes' drive from the city centre, in the city centre near Queen Street and in Manukau, the South Auckland industrial area where many fleets are based. Leave the city outside peak traffic (7 to 9 am and 4 to 7 pm). 23 companies in this study had pick-ups in Auckland. Our search prices each company's Auckland pick-up as a single location, so it does not tell airport and city depots apart.
We compared 1,098 matches with Christchurch: the same vehicle in the same week typically cost the same when picked up in Auckland. It was cheaper here in 255 cases and dearer in 146. The table below compares every city we studied.
One way to Christchurch: on the same vehicle and week, typically NZ$390 more for 7 nights than returning it to Auckland (based on 254 matches from 22 companies). One way to Queenstown: on the same vehicle and week, typically NZ$950 more for 7 nights than returning it to Auckland (based on 138 matches from 11 companies). Ending your trip here: one way from Christchurch to Auckland typically cost the same as a round trip from Christchurch (based on 264 matches).
To reach the South Island, drive about 640 km south to Wellington and take the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry to Picton, about 3.5 hours. In our search of 23 rental companies, the typical campervan costs NZ$165 a day from May to September, NZ$287 a day in October and November, NZ$315 a day in March and April and NZ$369 a day from December to February. The cheapest offer was NZ$37 a day, the Lucky Rodeo (Automatic) from Lucky Rentals in June.
A typical 7-night rental costs NZ$1,158 from May to September, NZ$2,011 in October and November, NZ$2,207 in March and April and NZ$2,580 from December to February, before excess cover and extras. With zero excess, the cheapest campervan for 2 in mid-March came to NZ$1,038 for the week (Escape Rentals).
June, with a typical price of NZ$146 a day, followed by August at NZ$147 and May at NZ$156. February is the most expensive month at NZ$443 a day.
Spaceships has the lowest typical base price in our search, NZ$64 a day, followed by Escape Rentals at NZ$73 and Lucky Rentals at NZ$86. On 3 November 2026 we searched the CampervanPlanet booking engine for 7-night rentals for 2 people, picked up and returned in Auckland, one sample week every month from November 2026 to October 2027: 1,130 prices for 107 vehicles from 23 rental companies. Price per day = rental price for 7 nights divided by 7, for every company. Typical = median price per day. Prices are the rental price shown in our search in New Zealand dollars; excess cover, extras, anything paid at pick-up and the bond are not included. Rooftop tents are excluded. One-way prices are for the weeks of 8 December 2026, 9 March 2027 and 8 June 2027. Prices change with dates and availability.
